Lego has always been an inspiration to me. I can still vividly remember those 70s and 80s beige (everything was a variant of brown in those days) plastic boxes that I kept all the bricks in.
The hours and hours spent making structures. From the basic bricks to the made-up stories with the little yellow people. It’s incredible not only to see the growth of Lego as a company but the astonishing designs and partnerships they have made. If you’re like me, there is a huge temptation every time I walk past the Lego shop in Liverpool. Even just to find a Darth Maul keyring!
Genius is a word that is overused these days, but in this case, the word is absolutely appropriate. I’ve seen Lego used in so many different places for so many different uses. From six-year-olds with Marvel Superheroes to corporate innovation workshops discussing client demographic. Regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity, there is a connection made in the room.
The simplicity and versatility of Lego were one of the main inspirations behind Putting Edge. The brick concept influenced how we went about making our modular, pop up mini golf courses. Every section is 80cm x 80cm, so one simple ‘hole in one’ challenge can be quickly changed into a different shape and different challenge. When setting up at any event or activation, it takes me back to birthdays and the excitement of laying it all out. Taking time to look at the design, putting everything together for hours of play.
Now I’m not saying what we do is genius (that’s up to others hehe). But I’ve seen that same look in people’s eyes. From a salesperson on an exhibition stand , a company executive at corporate conference to a child or parent at a family fun day, wedding or shopping centre activation. I’ve seen those eyes light up and hands rubbed together with glee. To read about the importance of play, click here.
